The Concorde in flight

The supersonic aircraft CONCORDE will be a plane used by the President of the Republic, François MITTERRAND for official trips on several continents.

in Toulouse on May 07, 1971

French President Georges POMPIDOU was the first to fly the CONCORDE 001 prototype on an official trip from Brétigny sur Orge to Toulouse. The aircraft flew at 2,000 kilometers/hour.

It was French President François MITTERRAND who decided to use a specific CONCORDE for long-distance presidential travel, after a trip to China.

The aircraft was specially reconfigured for his travels, with a special layout for the President in the front, featuring special seats and a bed for lying down.

Interior of a Concorde

The rear was reserved for guests. As you can see from this photo, the interior was very tightly packed to enable the aircraft to reach extreme speeds and carry up to a hundred people.

Thirteen tanks containing a total of 95.8 tonnes of kerosene, or around 119,500 liters (density 0.8), feed the engines. These tanks are located in the wings, in the tail cone behind the baggage compartment and in the fuselage.

The fuel requirement for a flight to the USA was a full load of 95 tonnes, with around 13 tonnes remaining on arrival. This remaining quantity could be used in the event of air-conditioning or engine failure, and as a back-up in the event of the arrival stopover being unavailable.
The return to EUROPE did not require a full tank, thanks to favorable winds. The quantity for the return trip was around 78 tonnes, with a further 13 tonnes left over.

The call sign of this presidential CONCORDE was AF 100F.
To give an idea of the speed of this aircraft, it made regular flights between Paris and New-York in 3h30mins, compared with the usual 7h20mins for conventional aircraft...

The average round-trip fare on CONCORDE averaged 8,000 to 9,000 euros over the latter part of its career.

To enable the President of the French Republic to carry out his role anywhere on the globe, the aircraft was equipped with a system for encrypting “sensitive” communications.

The Americans have long had a specific, but more conventional, aircraft for their President's flights:

The end of French presidential flights came in 1995.

The President who succeeded François MITTERRAND, Jacques CHIRAC, preferred to travel in a more conventional aircraft for reasons of economy.

After a flight, between 16 and 20 hours of maintenance were required. Maintenance requirements increased with the age of the aircraft.

Interestingly, the USA is currently studying the feasibility of returning to presidential supersonic flights with this type of project:
